Adobe, Shockwave, and Google in NYT

August 8th, 2006

Bruce Chizen, the CEO of Adobe, was interviewed by the New York Times this past weekend. The Shockwave plug-in was mentioned. I find that a rather positive thing, since no one from Adobe/Macromedia had mentioned Shockwave in recent years, and I often wondered if they were still aware of it. From the interview:

Q. You recently announced a partnership with Google, which is in a fierce battle with Microsoft in the Web search market. Was this a case of two players joining forces?

A. It had nothing to do with either of our relationships with Microsoft. It just made a lot of sense. We have significant reach to the user if you look at the Shockwave client, the Adobe Reader client, the Adobe Flash Player client, and Google wanted to have access to those customers.

Although I enjoyed that snippet the first paragraph of the article referred to “Adobe digesting Macromedia.” I don’t know if I’d like to be digested…

Hey folks, as I’ve been posting elsewhere I want it to be clear that there is an official FAQ on the way that will commit to having a new major release of Director in the first part of 2007. That FAQ will be on adobe.com shortly, I was simply given the green light to share that information early as part of our sponsoring and attending the Casuality game conference in Seattle late last month. Please note the wide and general time frame, “first part of 2007”, for now we cannot get any more granular than that but I’m happy we can at least show firm public commitment to Director/Shockwave going forward. 🙂

3 things i like about this..
    a) the CEO of Adobe is knows about shockwave… and isn’t embarrassed to talk about it in public (as macromedia seemed to be)
    b) the shockwave client and flash player are clearly worded as separate entities.
    c) shockwave is mentioned first… hehe (petty, but hey 😉
