    Director refused to die 🙂

    Feh. Just downloaded the trial.

Tried firing up my “MVC Framework” test movie, and when I press play, it just sits on frame one and never moves. I’ve been poking at it, trying to figure out why the play head never advances, and I haven’t figured it out yet.

Not sure what it’s doing, but it pretty clearly broke something that once worked. Not a good sign.

LOL. Good luck with that. All my old stuff runs…mostly. Even some 1996 stuff. Kinda frightening to see it on an iPad.

Yeah, I can’t even get it to play a simple movie. I created a new Director project, scribbled out a graphic in the image editor, dropped it on the stage, added a keyframe at the end, moved it. Scrubbing through the timeline shows it moving, but if I hit “play”, it just sits on frame one doing nothing. Publishing it to an app works, but that just sits on frame one also.

Not sure what’s going on, but it’s broken.

Working fine for me. Tested many movies. Mac Lion.

    From : http://helpx.adobe.com/director/using/publishing-ios-devices-using-director.html

“However, Director 12 will not allow you to directly publish applications to Apple app store. You need to enable this feature by purchasing additional options from Adobe. For more details, see this article.”

The link to the article at the end of the paragraph does not work and only redirects to the main Director page.

So I guess we’ll have to spend yet another couple of hundreds dollars to be able to publish on the Appstore?

It’s really a miracle in itself that Director is still alive and can now publish to iOS devices. I just wish it was more accessible to small indie devs like me.

That is an interesting statement. From what I know you won’t have to buy anything extra from Adobe. I’m wondering if they meant “Apple” in that statement (the Apple Developer fee).

    But I could be wrong.

I’ll try to find out more.

I sure hope they meant the $99 Apple developer fee.

Okay, so, the play head randomly started working again this morning. So there’s that.

Interestingly, when you agree to the free trial for Director 12, they send you an email. Inside that email, prominently displayed as a button with a graphic, is a link to the “Director Developers Center” where you can learn from other Director developers.

The link goes to : http://www.adobe.com/devnet/director

Click on that link, and you don’t actually go to the “Director Developer Center”. Instead, you get redirected to an article archive page, which says, I kid you not, “This page contains old and obsolete articles and tutorials for previous versions…”

    Doesn’t bode well.

Congratulations on the release! Great to see that Adobe still has an engineer supporting older software. Makes me think that Flash might have a future for some time too.

This is not good…the new terms are posted.

Ok so essentially I have to sell my soul to Adobe to be able to publish to the Appstore.

They want 10% of my sales revenue, and they keep the right to revoke, disable and remove apps from the store as they wish.

How could anyone want to invest time and money into a Director based iOS app considering how uncertain Director’s future is?

If Adobe decides to kill the product, it means that my Appstore apps will cease to work and/or won’t be updateable since the process depends on Adobe’s “Encryption tool”?

Also we still don’t know the price of this tool, who knows, maybe they’ll charge $100 for each app that you want to publish?

I’m really sorry Adobe, but I’m now seriously thinking of looking for another iOS IDE (like Unity) even though it will require some relearning.

  • 14. CC  |  February 13th, 2013 at 1:57 pm

    Despicable.

Not only are they asking for royalties AFTER charging $1K for IDE seats, but they also make you jump through both technical and bureaucratic hoops on top of that.

I don’t know what the Adobe board is thinking – the Director platform is not NEARLY attractive enough to developers to warrant those draconian demands.

@qubedstudios – Unity is really nice. Give it a weekend, and you’ll know whether it’s right for you.
