Director 11…this week??

So Director is supposed to be available for download tomorrow (or in the next few days). If Adobe is like Apple, they’ll release it on Tuesday. [Don’t get me started on the Adobe/Apple cage match that has been going on for a few years…ugh].

Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Will tomorrow be like Christmas in March?

As soon as I get it I’ll let you know. If anyone gets the “download now” message from Adobe let me know 🙂

Director 11 Press Train, GDC

From the wealth of online posts, looks as if Director 11 will be here tomorrow…and it might look like this (thanks Wolfgang).

Adobe next month will release Director 11, an update to its graphics assembly, that it hopes will lure game developers with its better 3D imaging.

Adobe is expected to detail the latest features of Director at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on Tuesday.

Director 11 is used to build games, as well as graphics-rich presentations, and learning applications. It uses the Shockwave plug-in to render 3D graphics.

The latest version includes physics, or movement between images, using the Ageia PhysX engine and support for DirectX 9, which can take advantage of recent graphics cards.

It will make it easier for designers to create more realistic 3D images, such as colliding cars on a racing game, said Rick Jones, senior product marketing manager at Adobe. The inclusion of Flash Player 9 enables the inclusion of animations and slick graphics for things like game menus.

When Adobe releases Director 11 next month, the price will be $999, rather than $1,199, which is the cost of the current version. Upgrades are $299 and a new student edition is available for $99.

Writing with Director 11

Way back at Adobe Max 2007 in Chicago (I can’t wait for 2008 in SanFran!) I went to the Director sessions. They were giving out pens to promote the next version of Director (which will officially be announced at the GDC this week according to online sources). I’d promised to put pictures of the pen online.

I finally got around to it 🙂

The pen has the new Director logo on one side, and the slogan “Make Better Games” on the others. Inside the pen are two metallic balls that you try to get through the red plastic maze. Very cool 3D game for the real world. I wonder if Adobe will have a 3D version of this shipping as a sample with the new Director. That would be cool.

Next Week: Director Announcement @ GDC

According to the most recent Director Podcast Adobe will be announcing the new Director at the Games Developer Conference next week.

Another user on the Adobe Director forums pointed to an image from the Adobe server (how on Earth do people find such things?).

Director Podcast Like Lazarus, Director at GDC?

After more than a year, the Director Podcast has returned from the “virtual” dead. Drop over to the Magicgate Director Podcast site to listen to the podcast.

Looks like Director will be at the Games Developer Conference (as they were last year), and possibly making an announcement of the new Director on Feb 18 based on this thread over on the Adobe Director forums.

Director 11 on March 3rd?

From a comment posted to this blog yesterday and some discussion on Direct-L it seems as if an email went out to some people saying that Director would be available on March 3rd. That does seem to fit in with the February announcement date. Guess we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out if this is true.

2008 is here. Where is Director? Shockwaves has arrived!

The new year has arrived. I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to do much of anything lately other than watch Apple stock plummet. Hopefully I’ll have a bit more free time during this year to get posts up here, and to watch the stock go up. I even bought some Adobe stock today…I figure it will shoot up when Director gets released 🙂

So…where is that dreaded release. For those that have been paying attention to the Director FAQ it now says, “…However, our current planning assumption is that the next major release of Director will be announced in February 2008.” So it seems like we’ll hear about it next month.

This FAQ has changed quite a bit during 2007, but it continues to get narrowed down (a specified month is so much better than a ‘sometime in the 2nd half of the year’ statement). Back on January 10, 2006, Steve Jobs announced that the iMac would now be using an Intel CPU. It has been two years without a MacIntel version of the Shockwave plug-in (other than running in Rosetta…but please…that hurts). Can Director and/or Shockwave get back in the game after such a long absence? I guess we’ll find out this year.

Allen Partridge (the Adobe Director Evangelist) now has a blog up and running called Shockwaves that is all Director, all the time. Be sure to stop by to see it grow.

Looks like it will be a happy year for Director and my MacIntels.

New Director Evangelist

With the upcoming release of Director 11 (still scheduled for last half of 2007…which is soon!) Adobe seems to have added a Director Evangelist to the team. From postings on the Adobe forums it looks as though Allen Partridge is now that person. He has been active on many mailing lists over the years, and was the author of Real-Time Interactive 3D Games: Creating 3D Games in Macromedia Director.

If you happen to be involved with a Director User Group you should check out this thread…he is looking for you!

Congrats Allen. Looking forward to hearing more about Director in the coming months and years.

Director Sneak Peek Video

For those that might be interested in watching the session, you can drop by and watch the entire sneak peek. It is a large FLV, so not sure how long I’ll get to keep it at that location. There is no audio at the start, and you have to really crank it up to hear things.

My poor little Mac Mini that hosts this site has been doing a bit of crashing lately due to lack of RAM. I plugged in the maximum 1 gig earlier this evening, so we’ll see how it goes. For the most part it is like one of those energizer bunnies and it just keeps going and going. Of course with OSX 10.4 and half a gig of ram it was just marginally sitting there with 12 meg free. Remember when that number was big…my how times have changed.
